Easiest Earflap Hat on Dummy

What do you do when a winter storm leaves you stranded at home with a foot of snow? You hit your yarn stash and make a quick hat so you can stay warm while you shovel your way out!

This hat uses approximately 200 yards of bulky yarn, so it stitches up quickly and easily. Flaps keep your ears warm and ties keep the hat on in blustery winds. This will be your new favorite hat!

Supplies:

Approx 200yds of Bulky Yarn (sample uses less than 1 skein of Lion Brand Scarfie)

Size K/10.5/6.5mm Crochet Hook

Yarn Needle or small crochet hook to weave in ends

Stitches:

Ch-chain

Hdc-Half double crochet

Hdc2tog-Half double crochet 2 together

Hdc3tog-Half double crochet 3 together

Instructions:

Round 1– 8 hdc into a magic loop. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (8 hdc)

Round 2– Ch 2 (does not count as hdc). 2 hdc in each stitch. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (16 hdc)

Round 3– Ch 2. *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next stitch, rep from *. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (24 hdc)

Round 4– Ch 2. *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches, rep from *. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (32 hdc)

Round 5– Ch 2. *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches, rep from *. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (40 hdc)

Round 6– Ch 2. *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 4 stitches, rep from *. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (48 hdc)

Round 7– Ch 2. *2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 5 stitches, rep from *. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (56 hdc)

Round 8– Ch 2. Hdc in each stitch. Join to top of first hdc with a slip stitch. (56 hdc)

Round 9-20– Repeat Round 8

Fasten off and weave in ends

 

Left Ear Flap

Counting to the left from slip stitch join of last round, skip 11 hdc. Join a new end of yarn with a slip stitch to next hdc.

Row 1– Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 9 stitches, hdc2tog. Turn. (11 stitches)

Row 2– Ch 2, hdc in each stitch. Turn. (11 stitches)

Row 3– Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 7 stitches, hdc2tog. Turn. (9 stitches)

Row 4– Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 5 stitches, hdc2tog. Turn. (7 stitches)

Row 5– Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in the next 3 stitches, hdc2tog. Turn. (5 stitches)

Row 6– Ch 2, hdc2tog, hdc in the next stitch, hdc2tog. Turn. (3 stitches)

Row 7– Ch 2, hdc3tog. (1 stitch)

Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Right Ear Flap

Counting to the left, skip 19 stitches from the Left Ear Flap. Join a new end of yarn with a slip stitch to next hdc.

Follow Row 1 through Row 7 of Left Ear Flap.

Edging

Crochet an edging around hat as follows:

Join with slip stitch to center back. Ch 2. *Hdc in each stitch until 1 stitch remains before earflap. Hdc2tog in next hdc and in same stitch as 1st earflap stitch. 11 hdc evenly up side of earflap, 3 hdc in top stitch, 11 hdc evenly down side of earflap, hdc2tog in same stitch as last earflap stitch and next hdc, rep from *. Hdc in each stitch to beginning of round. Join with slip stitch to first hdc. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Ties

Repeat on both earflaps:

Join a new end of yarn with a slip stitch to center hdc on tip of earflap. Ch 30. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Add tassels or pom poms to ends of ties and top of hat for extra fun 🙂
